Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The degree project is an individual engineering work, including theoretical and/or experimental activities, and report writing.

It should include both application and refinement of knowledge and skills acquired during previous engineering education, with a focus on production engineering.

The project task should require professional engineering or equivalent skills. The work should have a certain degree of novelty, and include elements of assessment, analysis and synthesis. A literature and/or state-of-the-art study should always be carried out. Depending on the character of the work, the literature study could be more or less extensive.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the degree project course, the student should be able to:

  • account for the disciplinary foundation and applicable methods within the subject area "Production engineering", and demonstrate advanced knowledge in its current research and development
  • with overall view, critically and systematically search, collect and integrate knowledge, and identify the need for additional knowledge
  • identify, analyse, assess and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations, even with limited information
  • plan and with adequate methods carry out qualified assignments within given time frames, and evaluate this work
  • develop and evaluate products, processes, systems, methods or technical solutions, considering the preconditions and needs of people, and the aim of the society for economically, socially and ecologically sustainable development
  • orally and in writing, in dialogue with different groups, clearly account for and discuss one's own conclusions, and the knowledge and the arguments that these are based on
  • make assessments considering relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects
  • participate in research and development, or independently work in other qualified activities

Course Disposition

The degree project can be carried out as a project at the Department of Production engineering, or at an external project provider, in Sweden or abroad.

Each degree project is assigned a supervisor from the Department of Production engineering, who will be the chief responsible for supervision of the scientific/academic work. An external project provider should also appoint another supervisor, who is responsible for the daily technical supervision. It is the responsibility of the student to request regular meetings with the supervisors.

The degree project is presented orally at a seminar at the department. At this session, a completed final report (as judged by the academic supervisor) should be available. Both this report, and the oral presentation, is reviewed and commented by a peer opponent (group), in addition to the supervisor's review and assessment.

Specific prerequisites

Requirements for starting the degree project apply, as established by the engineering programme. In addition, there are specific requirements from Department of Production engineering.

To start the degree project, it is required that the student:

  • has completed a total of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits of second-cycle studies, the latter mainly within the subject area of Production engineering.
  • have taken the course MG2100 Scientific Methodology for Production Engineering, or the equivalent
  • is able to demonstrate sufficient specific knowledge for the chosen problem area of the degree project

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

Documented attendance at at least two final presentations of other degree projects, and being the reviewer of and opponent at one further final presentation.
