The Maggan Hub pilot offers you as a student a unique opportunity to:
- Engage in real-world challenges to gain practical experience and contribute to developing solutions for a more sustainable and just society.
- Collaborate with a diverse community: Work alongside fellow students, faculty members, and external actors to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange ideas.
- Network with external actors: Connect with professionals from various industries and research institutes, expanding your professional network and potential career opportunities.
- Explore the technical aspects of problem-solving while also considering the social implications.
- Selected students will be payed according KTH regulations for “Students at KTH who performs occasional specific tasks/assignments” i.e. 150 SEK per hour spread out over 120 working hours during the project period between June 3rd and June 28th.
The pilot programme will be arranged in June 2024, with a start-up meeting in May. The programme will be coordinated by KTH Global Development Hub (GDH).

We acknowledge the significance of crafting challenges that hold relevance across diverse contexts. Given GDH's focus on activities and partnerships in Africa, our aim is to formulate a challenge that resonates in both African and Swedish contexts, thereby fostering cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
Besides working with given societal challenges, conducted under the guidance of GDH-team, the you as a student will have access to the Open Lab space – on the 2nd floor at Valhallavägen 79.
Important dates 2024
- Call opens: 15 February
- Application deadline: 10 March
- Results will be sent out: Within three weeks after the deadline
- Project period: 3 June – 28 June
- Pre-project meetings: in May (exact dated TBC)
- Final project report: 20 August
Evaluation
A decision will be made by the GDH team within three weeks after the deadline.
10-15 students will be nominated.
Background - Why do we call it "the Maggan hub"?
In 2022, Professor Emeritus Margareta Norell Bergendahl and, former Vice President at KTH was honored with KTH's Prize in Industrial Collaboration, formerly known as the KTH Gold Medal in Industrial Collaboration. This prestigious award carries a prize sum aimed at supporting collaborative initiatives prioritised by the recipient within KTH's activities. The proposed use of this prize sum is to initiate a pilot project, known as the Maggan Hub, to enhance KTH's capacity to conduct challenge-driven education for a greener and more equitable future.
The concept of the Maggan Hub draws inspiration from KTH Global Development Hub's partnership with the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This partnership involves faculty and students engaging with contemporary societal challenges within formal education and through informal learning activities facilitated by various stakeholders.
