Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course addresses the following themes: competition rules, their background and emergence; architectural critique and theories of quality in competitions; the architectural competition and its key actors, stages and organization; the competition documents (invitation, program, proposition and jury report); the jury's composition, the competence requirements of the members and their responsibility in the competition process; illustrative examples of completed competitions.

Intended learning outcomes

The main objective of the course is to provide knowledge of the architectural competition, its theory and practice and its role in the built environment and the development of society. Its three key actors are in focus: the organizer, the jury and the competitors. After the course, the participants shall:

- have knowledge of the architectural competition, its history and rules

- be able to interpret and analyze invitations, competition programs and design proposals

- understand how a jury assesses competition design proposals and appoints winners

- have penetrated some of the competition's central quality issues through an individual assignment

60 hp university credits within Architecture and the Built environment

Documented proficiency in Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 och equivalent.

  • MOM2 - Assignment, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

To obtain final grade, both course moments have to be passed, and 75% attendance at all tuition is required.
