AE111V Gender Issues in Developing Countries 7.5 credits

Course contents:

1. Meaning and scope of gender
2. Theoretical perspectives on gender, gender and development – conceptual issues and approaches
3. Gender perspective in development policy, implementation and evaluation
4. Cross-cutting gender issues in development, e.g., gender equality and millennium development goals (MDGs), gender and participation, gender and poverty, etc.
5. Gender issues in relation to different development contexts, e.g., water management, irrigation management, impact of climate change, etc.
6. Methods and tools for gender mainstreaming, e.g., gender analysis, GIA; Gender SWOT, SMART, gender-responsive budgeting, etc.
7. Application of different methods/tools to develop gender-mainstreaming projects.

Course goals: The overall aim of the course is to impart integrated theoretical and practical knowledge on gender and development issues in the South to students, researchers, teachers and development practitioners in different kinds of agencies in Sweden. After completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

1.      Describe the various theoretical perspectives on gender and development, particularly in the context of the developing countries.

2.      Explain the international policy context in relation to gender and development.

3.      Identify significant gender issues in relation to development, with reference to particular sectors.

4.      Apply different methods and tools for analysing gender issues.

5.      Develop projects for promoting gender-mainstreaming in their relevant work context.

1.      Attendance in atleast 80% lectures.

2.      Active participation in all learning activities.

• All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
• In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
• In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.

The course shall be held fulltime during the day. It will consist of 8-10 lectures with teachers from different social disciplines.It will be concentrated in two packets following a ‘sandwich pattern’ of education with 2-3 days together during first two weeks with relevant lectures/seminars, followed by a 10 days break when project work will be undertaken by the students based on a practical problem. A two days packet will then follow when the project seminars will be held and the course concluded.
