AE1702 Management of Development Cooperation Projects - Object Oriented Management 7.5 credits

The course aims to provide a general overview of the project cycle and its components on the basis of EU Project Cycle Management (PCM) and the concept Logic Framework Approach (LFA) for example:

Project identification, planning and implementation with problem description, feasibility analysis, action plans, cost estimates and project audits.

Project implementation including for example resource mobilization, organization, procurement, recruitment, administration, project management.

Monitoring and evaluation tools, effectiveness, efficiency

The course has a clear focus on aid and the specific requirements of various donors as Sida, World Bank and others are on the process, as well as the various tools used.

The likelihood that you will continue to work internationally is great and this means that you as an engineer will work in an environment very different from the Swedish. To succeed you must master the technical aspects in addition to the cultural dimensions at work in an international environment. A good basis for a future job abroad, you get by joining the following course.

The course aims to provide a broad overview of the project cycle, from concept through implementation to evaluation, and to highlight the components that are specific to development projects and the various problems that may arise.

After the course the participants will be able to:

Describe the project cycle parts and key concepts in project management.

Apply the LFA-method in the planning and implementation of projects.

Describe, analyse problems and discuss what drives development and the role of development aid.

Identify and apply knowledge which is useful for international work in Sweden and abroad.

Plan, implement and present an independent project (thesis and oral presentation).

General admission to university studies

The literature will be posted on the course website before the course starts. The material consists of information and articles from Sida, EU, UN, World Bank and other organizations as well as material distributed in connection with the lectures.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• PRO1 - Project Work, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

PRO1 - Project, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

SEM1 - Oral Presentation / Seminar, 1.5 credits, grades: P, F

Required for the passing grade is: At least 75% attendance (NÄR1; 1 credit), assignment (INL1; 2hp),  the project work completed (PRO1; 3 credits) and presented at a seminar (SEM1; 1.5 credits).
