AE1705 Developing Countries, Global Issues, Society and Technology 7.5 credits

The course has an interdisciplinary nature to provide a general orientation on various global issues, developing countries and "emerging markets". The course will provide a greater awareness of developing countries relations with the outside world and how the choice of technology affects development. To better understand today's society course begins with a historical overview and the significance of the colonial heritage .. Furthermore, global processes are discussed in terms of eg poverty, environment, water, health, gender, trade and others areas, as well as the link between development and globalization.

The course aims to inspire the students to learn more about the world we live in and to give an overview of the historical development and economic, social and political conditions in different developing countries as well as to discuss important global issues.

After the course the participant will be able to:

-          Describe how historical, political, economic and social structures enhance or prevents a positive development on national, regional and global scales.

-          Describe the role of globalization in development as well as the importance of developing aid.

-          Describe, problematize and disuss the driving forces behind development  and the threats and opportunities linked to this development.

-          Identify and apply the knowledge which is useful for international work in Sweden or abroad.

-          Plan, implement and present an individual task (paper or article).

General admission to university studies

The literature will be posted on the course website before the course starts. The material consists of information and articles from Sida, EU, UN, World Bank and other organizations as well as material distributed in connection with the lectures.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• PRO1 - Project Work, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
• SEM1 - Seminar, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

INL1 - Assignment, 2.0 hp, Grading: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

PRO1 - Project, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

SEM1 - Oral Presentation / Seminar, 1.5 credits, grades: P, F

Required for the passing grade is: At least 75% attendance (NÄR1; 1 credit), assignment (INL1; 2hp),  the project work completed (PRO1; 3 credits) and presented at a seminar (SEM1; 1.5 credits).
