Course contents

Experience of working in another country usually provides great advantages for the further career, as both multi-cultural understanding and language skills are increasingly important for employers. Working abroad is an experience that many employers today value the high because a lot of companies now belong to global groups. Working abroad is not only valuable from a working point but also contributes to personal development.

Many Swedish companies are represented all over the world and there are huge opportunities for international experiences. In order to maintain their position as successful companies in a global market, they need managers and specialists with international experience. To work abroad issues like cultural differences, time differences and different working methods becomes important. The possibilities are endless, but there are many things to consider before taking the big step.

The course aims to inspire and to provide the participants with information on how to prepare and what you need to carry along in your luggage, whether you see it as part of a career or just as a fun adventure. It has an interdisciplinary nature to provide a general orientation on various global issues and information about the EU, U.S., developing countries and "emerging markets" as a future field of activity. The course will provide a greater awareness of Sweden's relations with the outside world and how the choice of technology affecting development and opportunities for Swedish companies. Issues such as management of international projects and negotiating skills will be addressed as well as culture shocks and adaptation processes. When it comes to finding jobs abroad, there are some different paths to use.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course the participants will be able to:

Describe cultural patterns of different countries and how these affect work and leisure.

Describe the practical preparations necessary for a job abroad and to applicable regulations for working abroad.

Describe EU, China, USA, Latin America, Africa, India and others as future labor markets.

Describe globalization's role in development and its importance for international business.

Describe, problematize and disuss the driving forces behind development  and the threats and opportunities linked to this development.

Identify and apply the knowledge which is useful for international work in Sweden or abroad.

Plan, implement and present an independent project (thesis and oral presentation).

Literature

The literature will be posted on the course website before the course starts. The material consists of information and articles from Sida, EU, UN, World Bank and other organizations as well as material distributed in connection with the lectures.

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

Other requirements for final grade

Required for the passing grade is: At least 75% attendance (NÄR1; 1 credit), assignment (INL1; 2hp),  the project work completed (PRO1; 3 credits) and presented at a seminar (SEM1; 1.5 credits).
