Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
The course consists of a series of lectures, many accompanied by exercises where the students work on applied or theoretical problems.
The main topics below are all related to human interaction with the environment and how we can minimize risk to humans and infrastructure.
- Foundations of environmental geology;
- Earth processes and natural hazards: earthquakes, volcanic activity, rivers and flooding, slope processes, landslides and subsidence, coastal processes;
- Resources and pollution: water, mineral, and energy resources, waste as a resource, waste management and pollution;
- Environmental management, global perspectives and society: global climate change, geology and health.
The students will be required to prepare an oral and written presentation of a specific subject chosen by the student and approved by the teacher.
Intended learning outcomes
One of the aims of the course is to increase the student’s awareness and understanding of a broad spectrum of human interactions with the geological environment. Still another aim is to increase the student’s written and oral presentation skills.

Specific prerequisites
Three years of university studies (180 ECTS) in Engineering, Social Science or Architecture and documented proficiency in English B or equivalent.

- TEN1 - Examination, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- ÖVN1 - Assignments, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
