Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course gives insights in the theoretical and methodological elements underlying the notion of ‘integrated water resources management’ (IWRM), with focus on concepts and tools for sustainable planning and management of water resources.

Syllabus

  • History of water management
  • Concepts and theoretical perspectives on IWRM
  • Principles, methodologies & tools for practising IWRM
  • Cross-cutting global issues in IWRM, e.g., stakeholder participation, gender, public-private debate
  • EU WFD as an example of IWRM in practice,including transboundary management aspects
  • Small individual research project with focus on the implementation of the WFD.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the  participants should be able to:·    Explain the concept and principles of IWRM·    Describe the methodologies and tools for practicing IWRM·    Analyze the EU WFD as an example of IWRM in practice·    Work with integrated water management projects and get a fair insight in in the EU WFD

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

180 credits academic studies including basic knowledge in Environmental Planning and Hydrology or equivalent. Documented proficiency in English B or equivalent.

Examination

  • SEM1 - Seminars, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Examination, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

Written examination, compulsory attendance in workshops, at least 80 % participation in lectures, and approved assignments.
