Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

  • Introduction to construction engineering and an overview of structural engineering solutions
  • Fundamental aspects of groundworks, excavation and backfilling
  • An overview of the construction process: how a construction project is managed from concept to completed building, including regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • History of architecture
  • Project methodology and practical project work
  • Drawing techniques: practical work in CAD design and reading drawings

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • explain basic concepts and terms in the field of building technology
  • describe various building technology solutions
  • describe the construction process
  • describe the link between society’s sustainability goals and the urban development process
  • be able to identify examples of architectural styles from the 19th century onwards
  • produce drawings using software
  • interpret drawings for various disciplines
