AI1119 Introduction to the Planning and Building Process for Open 7.0 credits

The course deals with the diferent stages in the urban development process. The course is divided into four parts.
1. Land use planning - planning law, planning methods, the role of political processes and the role of the market, forces driving the development process
2. Natural resourses and environment - land, water and sewage systems, energy systems and environmental planning,
3. Building and construction design - the role of design, the basic structures of buildings and installation systems, project management,
4. Economics, ethics and history of technology - economic consequences and calculations, ethical aspects in the urban development process, introduction to forces that drive the development of technology.

The students have lectures and written exams together with the course Introduction to the Planning and Building Process AI1137.

The overall aim is to provide knowledge of the different stages in the urban development process. After the completion of the course the student should be able to:

• Describe and explain the different stages in the urban development process
• Account for how legislation and legal systems affect the process of urban development
• Describe and explain the basic structures of buildings and installation systems.
• Account for the physical and environmental aspects on land, water and sewage systems, energy systems and environmental planning
• Assess policy option, and actual results from the economic, social and ecological perspectives
• Identify and use different types of information sources and material for decision making
• Identify ethical questions in relation to land use development
• Reflect on how a practitioner can influence the develepment of the society on a long and a short term basis
• Identify what factors that have had an effect on the technical development connected to planning and building  

Compulsory for open students year 2 who have choosen Degree Progr. in Civil Engineering and Urban Management.The course cannot be followed by other students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• TEN1 - Examination, 1.7 credits, grading scale: P, F
• TEN2 - Examination, 1.7 credits, grading scale: P, F
• TEN3 - Examination, 1.8 credits, grading scale: P, F
• TEN4 - Examination, 1.8 credits, grading scale: P, F
• TEN5 - Exam, - credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

An approved written test at each element (TEN1-TEN4) gives a final grade D or E. Final examination (TEN5) is required for a higher grade.
