Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course includes lectures, seminars and report writings.

The following issues will be discussed:

  • property rights and law
  • customary law
  • statutory law and tenancy systems     
  • land registration and cadastral
  • systems                    
  • land reform
  • economic surplus and land productivity
  • equity issues and land distribution methods             
  • integrated water resources management (IWRM)     
  • water utility management                     
  • legal, economic and administrative incentives
  • and barriers in the decision-making process.

Intended learning outcomes

The objective of this course is to give an overview of property rights and land registration systems, land reforms, as well as incentive measures concerning the efficient and rational use of land and water. The course will emphasize comparison of various systems of land and water management.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Three years of university studies within engineering, surveying, architecture, planning, geography or other related fields.
