Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course has two parts where the first focuses on Philosophy of Science and different theories and approaches in that field (Popper, Kuhn etc).

The second part are more practically oriented and focus on how to carry out a scientific study and how to structure a scientific paper/report. This part lays the foundation for writing a good Master´s Thesis.

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is that the student should know:

  • The fundamental characterstics of a scientific study.
  • Different schools in the philosophy of science.
  • Typical steps in a scientific study and choices that has to be made in each step.
  • How to evaluate a study from a scientific perspective.
  • How to structure a scientific thesis.

Specific prerequisites

The courses Real Estate Principles (AI270U), Regional Economics and Market Analysis (AI271U), Real Estate Investment Analysis (AI272U), Real Estate Valuation (AI273U) samt Real Estate Finance and Investment (AI274U) must be completed.

Final literature will be decided at least one month before the start of the course, but it will be books like:

part 1:Chalmers "What is this thing called science"

part 2: Murray & Beglar "Writing dissertations and theses"

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Examination

  • INL1 - Term Papers, 4.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Written Exam, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
