Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The philosophy that is carried out at KTH has specialisation in technology and technological sciences. This is a broad research domain since technology and its basic sciences have multi-faceted contacts with philosophy. Examples of particularly concerned subareas of philosophy are epistemology, scientific philosophy, decision theory, logic and moral philosophy. Issues related to the effects of technology and its role in society are also treated within the subject.

The philosophic subject has at KTH a strong emphasis on cooperation with other disciplines. This implies that concept analysis and other philosophical methods be combined with empirical knowledge that is collected using methods from the technological, natural, social, and behavioural sciences. The degree project is carried out individually or jointly by two students. In the latter case the individual contributions shall be clearly separable.

The topic of the degree project can be suggested by the student, by a teacher, or by some external client. The student designs a work plan. When the work plan is approved, at the latest, a supervisor is appointed whom the student should be able to continuously consult during the work.

Intended learning outcomes

After completed degree project, the student should be able to

1. demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary grounds of their chosen subject area, as well as in-depth insight into current research and development and in depth knowledge of relevant methodology

2. demonstrate the ability to search, create and integrate knowledge and to identify if there is a need for additional knowledge, all with a holistic, critical and systematic work approach.

3. demonstrate the ability to identify, analyse, assess and handle complex phenomena, issues and situations also with limited information

4. demonstrate the ability to plan and with adequate methods carry out qualified assignments within given time frames and to evaluate this work

5. demonstrate the ability, both orally and in writing, in dialogue with different groups, to clearly explain and discuss conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which these are based

6. demonstrate the ability to make assessments considering relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects

7. demonstrate the skills required to participate in research and development work or to independently work in other advanced contexts.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Master of Science in Engineering: 300 credits

All courses in school year 1-3, or courses that are required for issuing of Degree of Bachelor as well as at least 60 credits courses at second cycle level, including some course in theory of knowledge and research methodology.

Master's degree 120 credits:

The main part of the programme, at least 60 credits, should be completed before the degree project may be started, of which 30 of these credits are within the specialisation area for second cycle studies in the main field of study

Generally:

This course is established without a main field of study, to make it eligible for students from degree programs with various main fields of study. The programme co-ordinator of interested student (or coordinator of first-cycle courses and study programmes) should together with responsible at dept for Philosophy ensure that intended work has a such specialisation and a such depth that it fits as degree project in student's degree programme's main field of study/field of technology.
