Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is divided into three distinct sections:

  • Innovation
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Leadership

with an overall focus is on understanding and addressing challenges and opportunities in the healthcare industry.

The course is given entirely remotely, in English. The course is given by KTH, but is a collaboration between KTH and two European universities (Trinity College, Dublin, and University of Lisbon); hence, the parts entrepreneurship and innovation in the healthcare industry are given by Europe's experts in the field.

The course includes web seminars with mandatory attendance, with associated reflection exercises and hand-in excersises, literature studies and recorded lectures. The hand-in exercises are presented in writing and then orally at web seminars. At the end of the course, a written examination in quiz form is given.

Intended learning outcomes

The overall goal of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge of how to lead, innovate and drive entrepreneurship in the complex and ever-changing healthcare industry (which is internationally seen as an environment that is difficult to predict and is called ’VUCA’ (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity).

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Define innovation ecosystems in healthcare settings including their distinguishing elements and alternative applicable approaches.
  2. Explain how innovation should be driven in healthcare, including the various methods that are applicable to the development of new products in healthcare.
  3. Identify and evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities within healthcare, such as effective planning and launching of health initiatives.
  4. Explain strategies for sustainable entrepreneurship within the healthcare industry.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of, and account for, changes and challenges that have to do with leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation in healthcare organizations.
  6. Show how leadership styles and leadership strategies can be designed in the healthcare industry and be able to give examples of leadership strategies that are suitable for organizational change and innovation in healthcare.
  7. Present a project idea linked to the course´s three modules – innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership – in oral presentations and justify and argue for the chosen idea.
