Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Conceptions of knowledge and communication. Media and modern culture.

Communication and cognition. Forms and analysis of communication.

Language, speech, and discourse. Narratives and rhetoric. Visual culture and communication. Representation, realism and ideology. Audience and reception.

Communication production and institutions. History of communication.

Media practices. Expression and design processes. Identity and digital expression.

Intended learning outcomes

The course objectives are to give

  • basic knowledge of different kinds and genres of human communication,
  • an introduction to the study of communication and media, and theories in this interdisciplinary field,
  • training in oral and written presentation,

in order that the student will

  • be able to analyze and deal with communication situations in their formation and future profession,
  • efficiently be able to communicate with functions in an information flow that lies close to designing and expressing information,
  • become better in transmitting messages.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
