Course contents

The course Knowledge communication in architecture research aims to introduce and discuss traditional academic communication, such as articles, reports and dissertations, and other formats and media in research and practice. The course discusses the properties of different forms of communication and their methodological and theoretical implications. Within the course, the student therefore will develop a wide insight in the relation between media, format, and content as well as the connection between research question, method, and medium.

In addition, the course will train the student in knowledge communication in different formats and media as well as for different audiences. This includes active and participatory forms (seminars, lectures, performances) and externalized forms (text, diagrams, images, objects) as well as interplay them in between. Within this framework this course thus constitutes a basic introductory pedagogical training.

After the course the student should on the one hand know the basis for and have basic skills in academic publishing, and on the other hand be oriented and develop skills in other modes of communication. This include some basic pedagogic skills in terms of knowledge communication.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course the student should

  • Know the basics of academic publishing
  • Know the different types of commonly found academic publishing and how they relate to one another
  • Be able to give account for dirrerent media and their character and possibilities for research communication
  • Know the basics for workning with different types of media for research communication
  • Be able to apply this knowledge for presenting research for different audiences and in different media. In practice this means that the student should be able to
    • Present research in both short, accessible texts and academic papers consistent with peer-review publication
    • Give comprehensive and pedagogically structured oral presentations in different context
    • Communicate research results as well as concepts and theories through different types of models, diagrams, illustrations and images.

Specific prerequisites

In order to follow the course a student must have completed a Masters´ degree in architecture or adjoining fields, or have an equivalent level of education. Priority is given to students enrolled at KTH or as doctoral students in architecture at other universities.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

The course is examined through active participation in seminars ands tasks, as well as hand-ins and presentations where the student on the one hand tests how different media and formats affect what is communicated, and on the other hand through tasks where this knowledge is used to develop a deeper understanding. All parts of the course must be completed for a grade to be given. Specific criteria will be defined in the announcement each time the course is run. The course is graded P/F.
