Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course covers approximately 80 full-time study hours and normally extends over a year with seminar sessions evenly distributed during term periods. The course assumes the form of critically reviewing science seminars focusing on leading published scientific research within the subject area of the course. The doctoral students select, present, interpret and critically examine leading research articles on the subject, and provide feedback on each other's presentations.

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to

  • demonstrate specialized theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills in theoretical chemistry and biology
  • demonstrate the ability to present pedagogically, critically examine and discuss scientific work in theoretical chemistry and biology
  • demonstrate the ability to acquire knowledge of academic authorship and the international scientific publishing landscape within the field of theoretical chemistry and biology
  • demonstrate the ability to identify, discuss and reflect on ethics and sustainability aspects in the research that is discussed within the framework of theoretical chemistry and biology

Active participation at 80% of the seminars, which, in addition to being present and actively participating in discussions, also includes giving two oral presentations and acting as an opponent at another doctoral student's presentation, as well as attending an introduction on scientific writing.
