Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course covers theory and practice in research ethics and research integrity.

Concepts included:

  • Legislation and central research ethics principles
  • History of research ethics
  • Ethical review of research projects
  • Good research ethics and its deviations
  • Research misconduct: occurrence, management, reporting

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course, doctoral students must be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of and account for current legislation, regulations, guidelines and recommendations within research ethics
  • demonstrate the ability to identify, critically analyse, assess and discuss research ethics issues
  • demonstrate the ability to account for and argue for what characterises good research practice
  • demonstrate the ability to discuss and problematise issues and problems relating to scientific integrity, publication ethics and conflict of interest

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

For final grade, 100% attendance is required as well as active participation in group discussions and approved mandatory assignments.
