FME3532 Researching Industrial Economics and Management: An Introduction 7.5 credits

The PhD-training as a process; the formal rules and regulations of the doctoral education and examination, acquaintances with research activities and research perspectives within the department of Industrial Economics and Management, formulating a research question and designing a research project, research ethics, requirements on a doctoral thesis, academic writing and scientific publishing, the role of seminars and academic dialogue, the system of research financing, the academic career.

The course aims at providing a basic understanding of research in terms of basic notions of research and the research process. The course also aims at preparing the doctoral students for life in Academia, discussing some significant aspects of being a researcher, e.g. preparing a research project, participating in the academic discourse, interacting with supervisors and other researchers, reviewing academic texts and the academic “game of publishing”.

The PhD-student shall after the course:

• Have a basic understanding of the academic subject of Industrial Economics and Management and its role at a Technical University
• Understand what it means to conduct research in Industrial Economics and Management; how different research projects, scientific contributions, journal articles, and PhD-theses can look like
• Know the purpose, structure and formal requirements of the PhD-education in Industrial Economics and Management
• Be familiar with the academic system; the organization and governance of KTH as a University, the systems of research financing, of academic conferences, of scientific publishing, and academic careers
• Understand how to formulate a researchable research question within the field of Industrial Economics and Managemen
• Be able to critically review, value and constructively comment on an academic text.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

To pass the course, the participants are required to submit written reflections of two pages on specified subjects (see the course schedule) and to be present at, and actively participate in, both lectures and seminars.
