Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

  • Survey of engineering materials and manufacturing methods
  • Properties of materials
  • Steel, aluminum and its alloys and plastics
  • Forming methods, i.e. casting and forging
  • Machining, i.e. turning and grinding
  • Selection of materials and manufacturing methods

Intended learning outcomes

The main purpose of the course is that the student will have a basic knowledge of engineering materials and manufacturing methods used in the manufacturing industries of today.

After the course the student will be able to:

  • Describe properties and field of application of the most common engineering materials
  • Explain how properties and fields of application interact for the most common engineering materials
  • Describe common manufacturing methods
  • Explain in which connection these manufacturing methods are used and which prospects or limitations they have
  • Analyze a problem associated with a product and propose material and manufacturing methods also taking economic an eviromental aspects in consideration.
