Course contents
Intended learning outcomes
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- account for the fundamental functions of mobile and satellite communication systems, describe the architecture of existing mobile and satellite-based wireless networks, and compare different network architectures
- perform calculations for key performance indicators at the link and system levels of mobile and satellite communication systems
- account for the key differences between various methods for modelling signal propagation and radio channels in wireless communication systems, and compare different propagation models
- account for modern methods for the design of future wireless communication systems, current technological challenges, and the role and impact of global standardization and spectrum regulation
- account for environmental and sustainability challenges within the ICT sector, including electromagnetic radiation, energy consumption, limited natural resources, adverse environmental impacts, economic effects relating to both infrastructure and equipment, as well as societal impacts
In order to
- independently be able to evaluate and optimize the performance of different wireless communication networks, select the most suitable network architectures, algorithms, and protocols to use in different deployment conditions, thus contributing to economically and environmentally sustainable development
- in professional life, identify and address open problems that arise with the growing importance and penetration of wireless communication systems into modern society.

Grading scale
Examination
- TEN1 - Written Exam, 5.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- LAB1 - Laboratory Work, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
