Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This course deals with projects as an occurance and the content and management of said projects. More specifically project goals, organization, planning, control, and follow-up. Furthermore, common models used in todays industry aimed at enabling projects to run smoothly are covered. Examples will be taken from the IT industry and students need to have a foundation in IT. 

The course is divided up into a theoretical part and a practical. In the practical part the student is required to apply the methods learned on a real business case in order to create a project plan. This plan will later be presented to the customer.

Intended learning outcomes

Student shall after completed course be able to:

  • Define and account for basic concepts in project managment such as planning, monitoring, risk management, estimations etc.
  • List, exaplain, apply common planning tools such as MS Project, Pert, CRM, and WBS
  • Exemplify and list different project models and how the different tools the students have learned during the course are related to these models
  • Explain the relationship between the IT industry and project managemet and understand the difference between IT projects and other projects
  • Explain the project managers/proects role in the organization/society. Furhermore, the student should be able to diffrentiate project managers from line manager. What are the similarities, differences and areas of responsibility
  • Apply the knowledge mentioned above to a real business case

Specific prerequisites

Completed upper secondary education incl documented proficiency in Swedish and English.

Recommended prerequisites

None, all students can apply. It is however good to have some IT course completed. This course is also very good for people working wanting to reeducate och further their previous educations

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Examination

  • PRO1 - Project, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Examination, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

This course will utilize two different forms of examination.4,5 points written examination will evalutate theoretical knowledge and the students ability to explain, define, and account for different concepts covered in the course. 3p Assignment that will be handed in which will evaluate the students ability to apply learned knowledge.

Other requirements for final grade

Grades will be assigned in the following way:All students must hand in the 3p assignement (Pass/Fail) in order to recieve a grade in the course. The written examination will determine the final grade in the course based on the 7 step grading scale put forth by Bologna.
