Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is based on the courses on lower level with a further learning of clause patterns of everyday spoken Standard Chinese and the structure of central signs and vocabulary. Furthermore, the course contains an increased number of writing and translation exercises with an increased number of written, formal and technical Chinese of different kinds. Facts about China, Chinese culture, society and technical development. The course includes approximately 330 new characters.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course are on level B1 according to GERS, the joint European framework for language.

On completion of the course - in addition to what is evident from courses on lower level - the students should be able to:

  • identify intonation and syllables in normally spoken Standard Chinese
  • Understand and use everyday and some more formal clause patterns
  • Understand and read certain texts of everyday and technical nature
  • talk and argue in an informal way about subjects of personal interest or linked to the everyday life, current events or technology
  • account for opinions and plans, retell course of events and describe impressions and experiences that concern daily life, working life or technology
  • give simple talks in Chinese concerning daily life, working life or technology
  • translate texts of everyday and simple technical nature from Chinese into Swedish

Specific prerequisites

General entry requirements. Completed and passed Chinese A2, equivalent older course or the equivalent knowledge showed through a compulsory placement test made before applying to the course.

Examination and completion

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
