Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Pronunciation, intonation and other aspects of language proficiency are practiced. Oral speeches, debates and summaries. Exercises on formal meetings and negotiations. Written production in English such as summaries, reports, proposals, debates, meeting minutes, formal letters and job applications.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course mainly refer to the levels C1/C2 according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Language.

The general aim of the course is for students to be able to use English as the main language in the workplace in a highly professional and varied way.

On completion of the course, the student should, in addition to what is required in courses at lower levels, be able to:

  • actively use and understand low-frequency words in English
  • adapt his/her language production to the communicative situation
  • be aware of implicit messages in the language that may be dependent on context
  • communicate ideas and opinions in situations that may be encountered in the workplace, for example in meetings and negotiations
  • in a varied language give an individually prepared presentation of a specialised nature
  • argue before an audience on current technical topics
  • write formal reports, letters and essays of a specialised nature.

Three years of academic studies. Completed and passed English B2 with at least grade B, a corresponding older course, or the equivalent knowledge displayed in a compulsory placement test taken prior to signing up for the course.

Examination and completion

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
