Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

After an overview and discussion of relevant theoretical perspectives, the focus will be on central aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication in Japan and China and on underlying factors such as values, organisational forms, patterns of interaction and effects of globalisation and technical development. We examine the bases of schools of thought important to these countries, such as Confucianism and Daoism, as well as concrete aspects such as dining etiquette, business culture and distinctive linguistic features.

Intended learning outcomes

The overall aim is that in order to improve how you handle professional communicative situations, you should be able to make well-reasoned analyses of how, and with what consequences, cultural ideas, technology and communication strategies affect different kinds of social interaction.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

· critically account for relevant perspectives on culture as a concept and as an object of study

· critically account for relevant theoretical perspectives and models for analysing inter-cultural communicative situations

· critically account for cultural structures, ideas and communication strategies of specific importance in an East Asian context

· critically account for how technical development affects the communication process

· apply your knowledge in analysing authentic communicative situations and suggest strategies for improved communication between individuals or within organisations
