Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course consists of lectures built up by examples taken from business news at the present that are followed by a discussion of theoretical concepts and practical examples in the following fields:

1. Business trends: How economics affect business in the world of today.

2. The start-up of a business by an entrepreneur.

3. Business management and customer satisfaction: Leadership, organization and employee empowerment.

4. Management of human resources: Motivating employees and teams.

5. Marketing: Building customer and stakeholder relationships.

6. Information management and decision-making: Understanding financial and non-financial information. The concepts of accounting and costing.

7. Managing financial resources: Financing and investing opportunities.

The course takes its departure in international business administration. However, some topics that are specific for Swedish companies are discussed, as well as examples from other companies.

Intended learning outcomes

Be able to describe the role of the company in the society, the different business cultures, and how companies are organized and managed from a business concept to ongoing operations with the support of strategic planning, formulation of objectives and management control.

Be able to describe central theories within the field of industrial management, such as costing, and to master terminology within the field. Furthermore, to have the ability to use tools in fields such as costing and investment analysis.

Be able to describe the transactions of a company; how they are accounted for, how the information can be analyzed in reports from the bookkeeping system, and how they can be used for the preparation of an annual report and a fiscal declaration for a company.

Be able to analyze the cash flow and the financial tools for a company, and be able to describe how the accounting system of a company is constructed.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
