ME2307 Energy Business 6.0 credits

The main focus of the course is how the interplay between on the one hand the characteristics and development of the energy system and on the other hand energy firms create business opportunities.

Also questions about investment, financing, management control, organisation, human resources, work environment, gender equality, sustainability will be included.

The joint course activities will be lectures, seminars, guest lectures and study visits. A main part is project work over selected themes and the development of a business plan.

After successful completion of this course the participant shall have:

- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about the basic characteristics and development of the energy system, in space (places, regions, countries) as well as in time (moment, day, year, epochs).

- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about different forms of business based on different core and support processes in the energy system, in space (locally, regionally, nationally, internationally) as well in time (epochs).

- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about what business can be developed in different parts of the energy value chain with energy services, energy carriers, customer categories, geographical markets, financial instruments a s o.

- Theoretical knowledge and practical experience from developing a business plan for an established or a new energy business.

Compulsory for ESI (CINEK3, Energy system and industrial economics in the Industrial economics programme). Elective for those fulfilling all three prerequisites of at least a) 120 hp b) 12 hp in industrial economics and c) 12 hp in any energy field.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Written examination. A smaller and a bigger course project. Active participation in lectures and seminars. Active participation in study visits.

• All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
• In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
• In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
