Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Study of process and equipment used in modern production including material removal, forming, joining, assembly and casting. Design considerations, economic factors, automation, metals and plastics processing, fabrication of electronic materials. Study of basic manufacturing processes and systems on process principles and technology and capabilities, material selection, and comparative analysis.. Other topics include NC, non-traditional methods, measurement, and statistical methods.

Long and Short-term demand forecasting methods, Regression analysis and smoothing methods, Estimation of trend, cycle, and seasonality components, Analysis of forecast error and computer control of forecasting systems. Aggregate planning and master production scheduling, Aggregation techniques, Aggregate capacity scheduling, Disaggregation of aggregate plan. Analytical and computer integrated solution techniques, Operations scheduling and control: Basic sequencing and scheduling techniques, Dispatching rules, Progress chasing and Updating of production schedules. Design of production planning and control systems: system design for continuous and intermittent production systems, Integration of master production, Material requirement and Shop scheduling systems.

Building blocks of a supply chain network. Supply chain inventory management: Newsboy, Base-stock, and (Q,r) models, multi-echelon supply chains, bullwhip effect. Best practice supply chain solutions. Internet-enabled supply chains

Intended learning outcomes

The course takes a modern, all-inclusive look at manufacturing processes, but also provides a substantial coverage of engineering materials and production systems. Materials, processes, and systems are the basic building blocks of manufacturing and the three broad subject areas of this course.

The course is designed to prepare attendants to apply analytical methodologies and information technology in supply chain management. Traditionally industries focus on operation evaluation and performance improvement of manufacturing process; however, the deficiency of supply chain coordination results in severe downgrade of business competitiveness. With advent of information technology, computers not only improve manufacturing operation and management and also strategic decision-making as well.
