Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course builds on knowledge in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and electrical engineering, with an emphasis on the technical characteristics of energy processes and/or energy systems of industrial relevance. The following topics are covered:

Electrical Engineering

  • Electrical safety: responsibilities, authorization, regulations
  • Application of single-phase/three-phase fundamentals
  • Drive systems with electric motors and frequency converters
  • PV systems

Work Environment

  • Pressurized systems and safety aspects
  • Hot systems and safety aspects
  • Risk assessment and safety systems

Measurement Technology

  • Theory and practical measurement
    • Temperature, pressure, flow, electrical quantities (voltage, current, phase shift, power, energy)

Data-Driven Maintenance

  • Overview of predictive maintenance and operation monitoring

Practical Laboratory Work

  • Mechanical maintenance: flanged joints, valves, cleaning
  • Vibration analysis and bearing replacement
  • Measurement on heat exchangers
  • Electrical measurement on fans/pumps

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Apply basic electrical engineering principles

2. Explain the concept of electrical safety in operating environments

3. Identify occupational health and safety risks and apply safety procedures in energy systems

4. Perform and interpret measurements of temperature, pressure, flow, current, and voltage.

5. Perform practical maintenance measures on common components in energy systems.

6. Understand the basics of data-driven maintenance and process monitoring.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Basic electrical engineering, equivalent to MJ1015.

Literature

You can find information about course literature either in the course memo for the course offering or in the course room in Canvas.

Examination and completion

Grading scale

A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Examination

  • TEN1 - Written exam, 5.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • LAB1 - Labs, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
