Dr. Ali A. Butt developed a life cycle assessment (LCA) framework for asphalt pavements at KTH. The developed framework could quantify energy and emissions associated to different pavement design alternatives at the late project planning stage (such as in the design and procurement stages). Currently, Dr. Butt is working on several federal and state funded projects which include:
- Development of California specific life cycle inventories for pavement materials and structures - pub
- Multicriteria decision analysis using LCA and life cycle cost analysis
- Development of transport infrastructure LCA tools
- eLCAP for California Department of Transportation
- LCAPave for Federal Highway Administration
- Web-based airfield LCA tool for Federal Aviation Administration (under-development)
- Investigating the effects of Pavement Structural Response on Vehicle Fuel Consumption and Emissions and develop models that could be used in LCA tools and pavement management systems - pub
- Social, socio-economic and environmental LCA of complete streets
- Develop Urban metabolism-LCA framework to be able to quantify hardscape material and water flows - pub
- Recycability and reuse of municipal solid waste and construction demolition waste in road construction
- Several other Sustainability related projects: List of Publications
