Resume your studies

The possibility for you to return to your studies depends partly on the availability of your previously attended programme and seat limitations for courses offered within the programme. If you do not have an approved leave from studies, courses with seat limitations are only open to you if there are seats available. For information and guidance on the possibility of returning to and completing your programme studies, please contact info@kth.se .

Part of the process of returning to and completing your studies is to consider the possibility of recognising prior learning for credit transfer. This means that if you believe you have the necessary knowledge to meet the requirements for a course or a qualification, by work experience or professional experience for example, you can apply for recognition of prior learning. Terminated programmes

If you have studied a programme that has since been terminated you must apply for a new programme or ”senare del av program”. When admitted to a new programme you can apply for credit transfer of your previous studies. You can also apply for single subject courses at KTH to fulfil the requirements for a Degree.

You can complete courses that are still active as long as you have been registered on the course, even if they belonged to a terminated programme. Please contact the school's office for student affairs if this is the case.

The above information concerning students wanting to return to studies without having an approved leave from studies and students with ongoing studies within a terminated programme is founded on a decision made by KTH:s University Director effective 1 February 2021.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is my program terminated or active?

In the programme syllabuses  you will find information about which programs at KTH who are terminated (programmes without new admissions) and which are active. It is the education code that governs its content.

Is it possible to complete courses within a program that has been terminated?

If the course is terminated, you cannot complete the course. In the Programme Syllabuses  you will find active and terminated courses. It is not possible to be registered on a new course code, but it may be possible to be re-registered on an active course that you were previously registered on.

How do I sign up for a free standing course at KTH?

KTH has a limited number of freestanding courses. They are aimed at graduated and professional engineers and architects, but everyone with a relevant background is welcome to apply. You can find further information on freestanding courses on the KTH website

Is the degree work at KTH available as a free standing course?

Unfortunately, KTH does not give the degree project as a free standing course. To be able to write your thesis at KTH, you need to be admitted to an active programme.
