Course presentation

The overall aim of the course is to give an introduction The overall aim of the course is to give an introduction to how companies and organisations deal with environmental and sustainability matters. The course reflects different strategies, tools and accounting systems being used in the current development process and the driving forces behind them. The course discusses both process and product development in different companies related to sustainable development.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Strategies, motivations and driving forces to implement and develop environmental management systems in companies and organisations. Current and emerging environmental management systems and standards as ISO 14001 and GRI Sustainability Reporting, and tools like Corporate Social Responsibility, Codes of Conduct, Environmental- and Sustainability reporting, Climate Indexes.

Intended learning outcomes

The overall aim of the course is to give an introduction to how companies and organizations deal with environmental and sustainability matters. The course reflects different strategies, tools and accounting systems being used in the current development process and the driving forces behind them. The course discusses both process and product development in different companies related to sustainable development.

After concluding this course the student should be able to:

  • Describe and explain the processes for certification, registration and maintenance of an EMS according to ISO 14001 and EMAS.
  • describe and explain the most significant tools in the environmental and sustainability monitoring, planning and reporting in companies and organizations
  • describe how environmental law is used to control environmental impacts from companies
  • describe, analyse and compare the environmental- and sustainability management and performance of  companies and critically review the goals achieved.

Learning activities

The course includes lectures (concept lectures and mandatory guest lecture from companies and organizations), workshops that are linked to the lecture content and group work, a group project assignment (including report and discussion seminar) focusing on a company's sustainability management performance, a home exam and an individual relection assignment.

Will be announced at the beginning of the course. The literature is mainly scientific articles and other relevant reports.

Examination

  • PRO2 - Project, 7.5 credits, Grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

PRO2 - Project, 7.5 credits

The final grade is the sum of the grades for Project report (A-F), including individual seminar grading, and Project - final comparison (individual, A-F), and based on Pass grade on all the other graded activities: Home Exam (individual, P/F), Law Assignment (group, P/F), questions to a guest lecture (individual, P/F) and lecture attendance (P/F).

  • In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
