Course contents
The course is delivered through various modules, primarily in the form of seminars, focusing on subject-related and professional role-related issues connected to sustainable development.
Key topics include:
The connection between physics and sustainable development.
Strategies for complex problem solving.
Sustainability aspects in the workplace.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
Demonstrate insight into the role of science and technology in society and the responsibility of individuals in using it for sustainable development, focusing on how a physicist's skills can contribute to a sustainable society.
Demonstrate the ability to clearly present and discuss their conclusions, knowledge, and the arguments behind sustainability assessments in both oral and written forms, in dialogue with different groups.
Learning activities
Four seminars with mandatory attendance. Students will be divided into two main groups (group A and group B) during the course and a student should only attend the seminars for one of these groups. Decision about a student's gorup belonging is taken by the course responsible teacher after having considered the preferences expressed by each student in the pre-course questionnaire.
Group project work and oral presentation. Students will be divided into work groups of 4-5 students having a diverse backgorund. Each work group will choose a subject related to sustainability and present their findings at a final seminar.
Preparations before course start
Specific preparations
It is mandatory to answer the course pre-questionnairebefore the course starts. The answers from this questionnnaire will be used when the course responsibel teacher set up student work groups and divide students into main groups (which determines the scheduling of the seminars).
It is also mandatory to have read the relevant course material and answered corresponding quizzed before each of the seminars. This ensures that you will get most out of the seminars, since the sminar activities assume that you have prepared yourself in advance.

Support for students with disabilities
Students at KTH with a permanent disability can get support during studies from Funka:

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

REF1 - Reflection, 0.5 credits
This is the oral part of the group project where you present your project and your results at a seminar in front of your peers.
SEM1 - Seminars, 1.0 credits
There are four seminars in the course and it is mandatory to actively participate on all of them. To pass this examination, you need to:
Pass all quizzes related to the seminars
Partipate actively on all the seminars
Actively work on the group project in your work group
Grading criteria/assessment criteria
Active participation on the seminars and at the final group presentation.
Alternatives to missed activities or tasks
You may miss maximum one of the four mandatory seminars. Based on the number of students missing a seminar, it is up to the responsible teacher of each seminar to decide how this additional task will be arranged and organized. More information will be given after the seminar, If you miss two or more seminars, you must redo the seminars next year.
Ethical approach
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
