Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The following is treated in the course:
• rhetorical strategies, dispositions and structures
• rhetorical fundamental concepts and figures of speech
• adaptation to target group, contact with audience and stage fright
• text and sentence structure

Typical oral assignments:
• an informative oral presentation
• an argumentative oral presentation
• a rhetorical oral debate on a controversial topic

Typical written assignments:
• a written revision of a text
• an argument text
• a short written analysis of a speech

Intended learning outcomes

The course intends to develop the student's language skills and global competence for efficient academic and professional communication.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

-write effective texts and speak before an audience in a structured and efficient way that is adapted to the target group

-give an account of and analyse different rhetorical strategies and apply these in his/her speeches and texts

-work actively in structuring a speech and with the writing process, for example by giving and taking constructive criticism

-account for insights in the language, the history and the culture of the English-speaking world

-adapt his written and oral communication to target groups from different backgrounds
