Course contents *

The thesis involves a deeper study of an individual chosen topic within the field of Urban planning. Each student independently formulates a research problem related to knowledge acquired in previous courses. The problem can, for example act to deepen their knowledge in a particular area or to review a planning process. The course also has a focus on the role of the planner and what their own professional role may come to include. In that respect the essay writing is an opportunity to reflect on a future professional role.

Intended learning outcomes *

The student must
- independently formulate a research problem related to the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier courses in the field of  Urban Planning
- in the context of an essay, independently analyze and discuss issues relevant to the chosen problem
- reflect on and critically review their own and others' scientific achievements
- document and present their work with the requirements of structure, formalities and language
- identify the need for further knowledge in their chosen field and take responsibility for developing their knowledge

Course Disposition

Teaching is in seminars. As part of the course is an introductory course on information retrieval at the library. In connection with this, each student choose an optional Swedish doctoral thesis with relevance for the filed of Urban planning. to read and report in a seminar. A number of seminars on the writing process, research methods and the role of the planner will be held. In connection with these seminars written assignments will be required. A number of study visits will also be conducted to provide insight into some of the many different roles a planner may have. The intention is thus to identify both problems and opportunities planners might have to deal with in their professional role. Students will independently have to seek the literature relevant to their chosen topic. The essay should have a scientific structure. Follow-up seminars and individual supervision take place during the course in order to guide students during their working process. In addition to writing an independent essay, each student is also required to oppose on another student's essay.

Specific prerequisites *

A major part of the studies must be completed before the thesis work may commence. This means that at least 120 credits must be completed, including 60 credits with in-depth focus at the first level within the main field.
