Mobile GIS

Mobile GIS is the expansion of geographic information system (GIS) from the office to the field. A mobile GIS enables field based personnel to capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display geographic information. This indepth course will explore the basics of the Mobile GIS and Global Positioning System (GPS) using ArcPad and GPS Correct software. Students will receive theory and hands-on field experience using GPS, GIS and Mobile GIS hardware and software to gather field data and integrate it with ArcGIS software.

  • Creating real-time GPS based shapefiles using ArcPad
  • Integrating Mobile GIS/GPS data with ArcGIS software
  • Usability of Mobile GIS

Intended learning outcomes *

The goal of this course is to provide the students with practical skills in the use of cutting edge Mobile GIS technologies.  The specific goals are:

  • Understand basic GPS and Mobile GIS concepts
  • Utilize GPS devices and mobile CE devices
  • Effectively use ESRI Mobile GIS software and Trimble GPS Correct software
  • Manage and organize geospatial field data
  • Create custom mobile forms for efficient field data entry
  • Sync mobile devices with an enterprise system
  • Successfully manage Mobile GIS projects
  • Integrate field data with ArcGIS for map making and spatial analysis
