AH1024 Traffic Management and Operation 7.5 credits

Suitable transport system requires efficient operations. Management, monitoring and control of transport system are an important requirement for high levels of service for transporting people and goods.

The component of transport systems include technology, network, tolling stock (vehicles, containers, etc.), and various facilities (terminals, stations). The performance of the system depends on the interaction among the various components and the demand for using them (demand-supply interactions).

The supply side determines the capacity of the system. Many transport systems today operate close to capacity and therefore experience high levels of congestion, delays, and negative environmental impacts.

Effective management and control of transport systems, requires knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of the various facilities, and remaining components; and methods for assessing the performance of the system for given demand.
