Content and learning outcomes

Course disposition

The course gives basic training in formulating, analyzing, and solving a problem related to the operations of transportation systems (all modes), often providing the opportunity to the student to interact with operators of transport services and address problems of interest.  Students are also trained in technical writing and presentation. The work may lead to a thesis project as well. The course is carried out as an individual independent project.  If more than one student are interested in the topic a team project is also possible.

The main activities in the course are:

-       Problem discussion and formulation  

     Literature review and/or information collection as necessary

-       Development of project plan which outlines the main project activities.

-       Approach

-       Proposed solutions or alternatives

-       Technical report documenting the project

-       Presentation

Course contents

The main activities in the course are:

  • Problem discussion-Development of project plan with detailed tasks
  • Technical approach and steps that may include some or all of the following elements (depending on the topic and scope of the project)
  • Precise problem formulation
  • Literature review-Methodology and technical approach
  • Collection of necessary data and information from companies and organizations
  • Formulation of alternatives
  • Proposed solution
  • Technical report documenting the project-Presentation

Specific prerequisites

3 years academic studies (180 hp) in engineering program within natural or scoial sciences. Required courses and background depend on the problem. The examiner approves the qualifications of the student for the proposed work.
