AK2217 Urban Environmental Humanities 7.5 credits

This course is an introduction to the environmental humanities through the study of cities and urban life. It will focus specifically on cities as complex sites of interaction, contestation and co-habitation between the human and more-than-human world, both historically and in the present day. Students will explore the theories, methods and approaches of environmental humanities as an interdisciplinary field, but also consider connections and collaborations with other fields within the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and technical disciplines. The course will take advantage of Stockholm as a living laboratory, using field study and situated and embedded research and observation techniques to consider complex and multi-sensory modes of developing environmental knowledge. Course material and assignments will help students develop skills in critical thinking, communication and source analysis, while also utilizing more creative modes of assessment and examination such as exhibitions, digital media and creative works.
