Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course serves as an introduction to the field of environmental humanities with a particular focus on the study of cities and urban life. The focus is on cities as complex sites of interaction and coexistence between the human and the more-than-human world, both historically and today.

Students are given the opportunity to explore theories, methods and approaches in environmental humanities as an interdisciplinary field, as well as the collaboration between the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and technical disciplines.

The course involves fieldwork with Stockholm as a living laboratory. Situated knowledge and observational techniques are used to understand different physical ways of developing knowledge about the environment in an urban context.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course the student should be able to:

  • Analyze the interaction between people and environment in urban areas.
  • Apply humanistic and social science theories to the study of urban environments.
  • Critically examine and problematize historical and contemporary urbanization processes with a focus on environmental issues.
  • Analyze, generalize and reflect on urbanization and environment together.
