Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims to deepen and widen the knowledge in architecture research within a defined area, and to thereby increase the possibilities of deepening and contextualising a research preject. In addition, the course trains the ability to understand, analyse, and critically examine both scientific and other literature, The course consists of thorough reading of a selection of texts within a chosen area within or related to architecture. The specific choice of literature is decided toghether with the examiner in relation to the amount of credits and leaves time for the reflective and presenting parts. The literature course further consists of follow-ups of different forms such as written feflections, discussions, and/or seminars The literature course can be coordinated as reading circles or similar.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course, the student should be able to

  • Give a thorough account for a field of theory, method, discourse, or similar for which the content of the specific iteration of the course has been designed
  • Critically reflect over this as well as give account for its relation to research in general
  • Discuss the relation to and relevance for ones´own research work
  • In writing or for the specific iteration of the course decided media present and discuss the course content, its strengths and weaknesses as well as, when applicable, its internal similarities and differences

Specific prerequisites

In order to follow the course a student must have completed a Masters´degree in architecture or adjoining fields, or have an equivalent level of education. Priority is given to students enrolled at KTH or as doctoral students in architecture at other universities.

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

    Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

    The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

    Other requirements for final grade

    Examination is mainly through follow-up of reading, where examiner or other by the examiner appointed person discuss the read literature with the student. The specific forms of examination is defined wtih each individual iteration of the course but always includes a written assignment. As the number of credits vary the student is awarded credits in accordance to the extent of work involved in the course. The course is graded pass/fail (P/F).
