Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims to develop the students’ knowledge of and capacity to conduct research in a project format, to develop skills in defining a project in relation to a research question, and to develop the understanding of how the project relates to research practice. The course consists of a delimited project and includes planning, description, completion, and reflection of research in this format, employing e.g. research by design, design-driven research, or artistic research methods. The course should include a discussion on how the project work relates to research methodology and scientific approaches.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course, the student should be able to

• Plan and carry out research in a project format

• Define and refine projects in relation to a research question

• Adapt the research questions and the amount of required work to the project's size

• Apply theoretical knowledge on research methods in the form of a concrete project

• On the basis of a limited project analyse results and production for continued theoretical development

Specific prerequisites

To be eligible for the course, students must have completed a masters´degree or have an equivalent level of education in technology, art or design (such as architecture, planning, civil engineering, design, arts and crafts, or fine arts) or affiliated subjects within the humanities and social sciences.

    Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

    Examination is conducted through a final project presentation along with supervision throughout the course. The examination should include written parts. The extent of work involved in the course should be adapted to the number of credits and decided before the course starts. The course is graded pass/fail (P/F)
