Content and learning outcomes
The main goal of this course is to give a widened perspective and deepened understanding for the own research area by providing an overview of the (third-cycle) subject area of Civil and Architectural Engineering. The course also practices general skills in presentation and communication of research and the ability to reflect on ethical issues in research as well as the role of research in society. The course is divided in four parts, Civil and architectural engineering at KTH, Research for a sustainable societal development, Scientific publication, and Ethical and legal issues within the scientific community.
Intended learning outcomes
The course will give the students ability to:
- orally and in writing present own research for target groups outside of one’s own specialization
- discuss research results in civil and architectural engineering and their relevance for societal development
- critically analyse and evaluate applied research methods and results from one’s own and others’ scientific studies in civil and architectural engineering
- account for the academic research process and the researcher’s role in both the scientific community in civil and architectural engineering and the society at large
- reflect on ethical aspects in connection to both research and scientific publication in civil and architectural engineering
- reflect on the role of civil and architectural engineering research with respect to a sustainable societal development, based on ecological, technical, social, economic, and gender-equality perspectives.
Literature and preparations
Equivalent to the prerequisites for admittance to third cycle studies in civil and architectural engineering.
The course literature is announced at the beginning of each course round.
Examination and completion
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
- INL1 - Written assignment, 7.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
Opportunity to complete the requirements via supplementary examination
Opportunity to raise an approved grade via renewed examination
- All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
- In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
- In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
