Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This is a course on different empirical, theoretical and methodological approaches to analysing, understanding and describing space. It brings together classics in geography and cartography with more recent scholarship in several disciplinary fields like postcolonial studies, historiography and STS to explore the power of maps and mapping practices in the creation and appropriation of place and space. The focus is on critical studies, engaging with the social power and consequences of established practices in geography and cartography from the territorial to the geopolitical scale.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will have developed a solid understanding of some of the key approaches in critical geography and cartography, both historic and contemporary.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The student is required to read all course material and be prepared to discuss the readings with the teachers. Each entry in the reading list must be commented with a written memo of 2-4 pages (1-2 k words 12 p, 1.5 row spacing). When the reading is completed, all memos should be sent to the teachers, after which a time for examination is set. In preparation for the examination, the student will prepare a shorter presentation in which the readings are brought together. This presentation can start the examination session.
