Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course combines theory and practice and consists of lectures, seminars, and home assignments. By the end of the course, the student will have planned and produced a scientific poster presenting their own research, based on effective graphic design principles, and will have practised analysing and providing constructive feedback on presentations from different scientific fields. Themes of the course include:

  • Science communication with a focus on adapting research findings for posters and visual presentations in order to communicate clearly to different target audiences
  • Basic building blocks and principles of graphic design
  • The use of colour, typography, and image composition for effective communication
  • Basic principles for the graphical presentation of research data and results
  • Image ethics and copyright

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to strengthen participants’ ability to communicate research findings visually through scientific posters, supported by images and illustrations.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe and apply basic principles of graphic design in the use of colours, typography, and image composition

  • select and create relevant content and adapt its visual form in ways that support the purpose of the poster

  • plan the overall structure and layout of a poster in accordance with the principles covered, and select and create images that capture attention and clearly convey and support the content and message

  • use image material produced by others in accordance with relevant copyright laws and regulations

  • INL1 - Submission assignment and active participation in course meetings, as well as approved take-home assignments., 4.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
