Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course contains two parts. One language-orientated component in which the student practices skills in order to communicate successfully in Japanese in academic or professional contexts. Language skills are revised and enhanced through continuous exercises and tasks, focusing on issues related to engineering and sustainable development.

The second part consists of a project. The project involves, for instance, co-operation with students from higher education institutions abroad or with relevant actors from the government or the industry. Through collaborations with native speakers, the student can apply the communicative and intercultural competences in authentic situations. The project also provides an opportunity to establish contacts with international students and the business community.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Follow instructions and conversations on topics related to their academic and/or professional subject area and recognise differences in registers.

2. Understand the main content of authentic texts on topics related to their academic and/or professional field and recognise differences in register.

3. Give a short presentation on topics related to their academic and/or professional field.

4. Give an account of different academic and/or workplace-related cultures and intercultural situations in order to be able to work effectively in international and multicultural contexts in the technical sector.
