Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Oral presentations. Discussions and listening comprehension exercises of authentic material to increase the student's understanding of current issues within technology and natural sciences (e.g. research ethics, sustainable development, technological breakthroughs). Reading and text production with the aim to develop genre awareness and linguistic registers. Exercises in nuanced language usage (the relationship between different stylistic levels, technical language and standard language).

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course mainly refer to level C1 according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Listening comprehension
• with deepened understanding follow lectures, debates and discussions of some length about complicated subjects also outside the student's field of interest.
• understand relatively advanced spoken language, even when the contents is not clear and the context only implied, and recognise idiomatic expressions and stylistic differences

Reading comprehension
• read, and present a deepened understanding of, the contents of authentic texts within different fields such as society, science and technology, also outside the student's field of speciality (also subtle details and implicit meanings)
• be familiar with, and have a deepened understanding of, differences between genres

Spoken production
• systematically account for subjects related to studies in technology, science, and work, as well as peripheral subejcts, in a clear and detailed way.

Spoken interaction
• speak fluently, spontaneously and efficiently, and adapt with precision to the communicative situation (subject and conversation partner) for social, interest-related, study-related and work-related purposes

Written production
• write clear and well-structured texts with an appropriate level of formality within complex areas related to studies or work in technological fields, society and science, in particular systematic argumentations within relevant genres
