Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course gives students the opportunity to develop their multilingual competence by reflecting on and using strategies such as intercomprehension, code-switching and mediation.

Students are exposed to French and German and should have prior knowledge of one, or both, of these languages. This gives them the opportunity to deepen and develop their existing knowledge of one or both languages. Students practise their ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual context, for example by delivering and understanding a presentation, and by arguing or explaining the content of a document or a video.

In the course, we also reflect on intercultural communication in order to handle intercultural situations with respect and adapt our communication style accordingly.

We use a variety of materials in both French and German. Our themes revolve around topics relevant to engineering professions.

The course develops linguistic flexibility, which is of great value for international mobility and working in global teams. The course is delivered digitally and includes assignments, interactive exercises and discussions.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Understand materials in subjects that are relevant for engineering professions in English/Swedish and French/German in order to present and explain the contents in the different languages.
  • Present facts and discuss subjects relevant to engineering professions in English/Swedish and French/German.
  • Use strategies and skills such as language alternation, code switching, transfer, and mediation to be able to work in a multilingual environment.
  • Be able to critically reflect on different intercultural situations in order to be able to work effectively in multicultural contexts in the technical sector.
