Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims to provide students with strategies for communicating persuasively in advanced English. Students will practise applying these strategies to produce persuasive oral presentations and texts within, but not limited to, their specific technical fields.

​ ​The course covers:

​ Linguistic strategies for persuading the audience in, for example, oral presentations, debates and argumentative texts with technical and scientific content, focusing on current topics such as sustainable development and societal challenges

  • ​Advanced technical and scientific English: style, text cohesion, sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary 
  • ​Presentation techniques 
  • ​Argumentative texts 
  • ​Source management.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

​ 1. ​identify and analyse effective communication strategies and some common rhetorical devices in speech and writing, and apply these in their own oral presentations and texts with technical and scientific content

​ 2. convey technical expertise in speech and writing in clear and effective English, and adapt language, structure and content to the purpose and target audience

​ 3. engage in discussions and participate in debates in English on topics related to their own field of technology, with the aim of persuading various target audiences.

Specific prerequisites

Documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
