This course aims to give students the skills and strategies needed to communicate persuasively in clear and effective advanced English. Students create impactful oral presentations and written texts within (but not limited to) their own STEM discipline and develop their skills in communicating their expertise to different audiences. Course participants are given personalised feedback throughout the course on e.g. grammar, vocabulary, style, structure, and pronunciation.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims to give students strategies for persuasive communication in advanced English. Students practice applying these strategies in order to create impactful texts and oral presentations about, but not limited to, their technical disciplines.

​ ​The course covers:

  • Strategies for creating impact in oral presentations, debates, and argumentative texts with technical and scientific content, and with focus on current issues such as sustainable development and societal challenges
  • Advanced technical and scientific English: style, text flow, sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Argumentative texts
  • Source management.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. identify and analyse effective communication strategies and some common rhetorical devices in speech and text, and apply these in their own oral presentations and written texts with technical and scientific content

  2. convey technical expertise in effective and clear English in speech and writing, and adapt language, structure and content to audience and purpose

  3. engage in discussion and debate about issues related to their own technical discipline, with the purpose of persuading different audiences.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • INL2 - Assignment, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • SEM2 - Seminars, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
